Brutalist Bons Mots

The impressive and award winning Tricorn Centre in Portsmouth was sadly demolished in 2004. It continued to win awards though being given "Best Demolished Building" by a group of architects, in 2009.

DID YOU KNOW? Not all concrete buildings are Brutalist and not all Brutalist buildings are concrete (Billy Reading)

Brutalism: where concrete meets controversy, and starkness sparks debate

Brutalism: the architectural equivalent of a concrete hug - sturdy, unapologetic, and occasionally divisive, but always making its presence known.

Brutalism: concrete jungles with attitude

Brutalism: concrete proof that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I had an awayday to Folkestone recently and found two, albeit average, examples of Brutalism. The one on the left is an NHS building called Westcliffe House (not uncommon to find Brutalism in the NHS). On the right are a couple of buildings on The Leas. More images at: pauldownsphoto.com
